Hutchinson (Kan.) Outlasts Snow To Win NJCAA Football National Championship

LITTLE ROCK, Ark.-Linebacker Tre Pinkney intercepted Snow reserve quarterback Gabe Sweeten in the closing moments and the No. 1 Hutchinson (Kan.) Blue Dragons outlasted Snow 29-27 to win the first national football title in program history Saturday at War Memorial Stadium.

Hutchinson tailback Tye Edwards added two rushing scores on 20 carries for 139 yards for the Blue Dragons, who overcame deficits of 14-0 and 21-10 to pull out the victory.

The Badgers started hot with signal-caller Garrison Beach (11-16, 185 yards, 2 TD’s, INT) throwing touchdown strikes to Deuce Roberson (3 rec, 28 yards, TD) and Tejhuan Palmer (4 rec, 131 yards, TD) of 11 and 69 yards, respectively.

Snow was undone by three missed field goals from kicker Stockton Lund as well in defeat.

Trailing 21-10 after an 11-yard touchdown run from tailback Mehki Kimble, the Blue Dragons received a 29-yard touchdown run from tailback Anwar Lewis (16 car, 73 yards, 2 TD’s) to pull to within 21-16 after the 2-point conversion attempt failed.

Lewis added another touchdown run, this one from 3 yards out, as Hutchinson took their first lead of the game at 22-21 with 12:48 left in the 4th Quarter.

Edwards’ second touchdown run of the game gave the Blue Dragons a 29-21 lead.

Snow responded with a 5-yard touchdown run from Sweeten but his 2-point conversion pass attempt failed.

The Badgers forced a Blue Dragons punt with 1:19 left before Pinkney’s interception gave Hutchinson the victory.
