BYU Athletics Releases Statement Concerning NIL

PROVO, Utah-Thursday, Brigham Young University’s athletics department released a statement concerning the NCAA’s ruling to permit student-athletes at member institutions under its interim name, image and likeness (NIL) policy to receive compensation.

Athletic director Tom Holmoe stated the following standards for student-athletes at BYU:

-compensation for NIL activities must be within fair-market value.

-student-athletes may not be compensated for athletic accomplishments (pay-for-play is disallowed at the institution)

-student-athletes may use BYU or athletic department marks and logos, including all aspects of the uniform, only after those rights have been secured through a formal agreement granting specified rights. In regard to this point, Holmoe said additional information on how to obtain such rights is forthcoming.

-student-athletes may not enter into NIL agreements with companies, businesses, causes or products that do not conform to BYU Honor Code standards.

-student-athletes must comply with BYU Honor Code standards. This includes the university’s standard dress and grooming standards, while engaging in NIL activities.

-use of institutional facilities, including athletic department facilities, is prohibited at this time.

-all BYU student-athletes must have NIL agreements reviewed by the athletics administration prior to engaging in said NIL activity. Disclosure forms are enclosed in this policy, Holmoe said.

Holmoe confirmed BYU athletics administrators will be meeting with teams over the next several days concerning how to provide additional guidance and answer questions about the NIL.
