There has been an increase in suspected salmonellosis infections in central Utah recently.
In a press release from the Central Utah Public Health Department released on July 30, it was shared that the prior week had seen an increase in gastrointestinal illness, suspected to be the result of salmonellosis infections. It was also shared that these infections are believed to be related to 24th of July festivities.
It is being asked that complainants be directed to igotsick.health.utah.gov where they can provide information on their illness.
For those who are ill, it was shared that antibiotics are not generally recommended in uncomplicated non-typhoidal salmonellosis and that supportive care and rehydration are the primary course of treatment.
Antibiotic treatment may be recommended for:
- People with severe illness
- People with continued fever or manifestation of extra-intestinal infection
- People with a weakened immune system, such as from HIV infection or chemotherapy treatment
- Adults older than 50 who have medical problems, such as heart disease
- Infants (children younger than 12 months)
- Adults 65 years of age or older
