(Salt Lake City, UT) — A new state law that aims to make online dating services and dating apps safer for users took effect Monday. House Bill 18 was sponsored by Representative Angela Romero after she read a Brigham Young University study that shed light on sexual predators using dating apps. The law requires dating apps to say whether or not they conduct background checks, and makes it so apps must inform users if they’re talking to someone who has previously been banned from the platform. Romero said “If I save one person’s life, or if I prevent someone from being sexually assaulted, then I’ve done my job as an elected official”.
