(Salt Lake City, UT) — The Department of Homeland Security is abandoning plans to turn a massive Salt Lake City warehouse into an immigration detention facility. A federal court filing yesterday revealed DHS no longer intends to convert the 833-thousand-square-foot property near Salt Lake City International Airport. The federal government bought the warehouse in March for about 145-million-dollars, prompting opposition and a lawsuit from Salt Lake City and Salt Lake County. DHS now plans to declare the property excess and turn it over to the General Services Administration for eventual sale.
