UVU Men’s Basketball Standout Fardaws Aimaq Named WAC Player of the Year

DENVER-Tuesday, Utah Valley men’s basketball standout redshirt sophomore center Fardaws Aimaq was named the WAC’s men’s college basketball player of the year Tuesday. Aimaq was also named to the All-WAC First Team, the All-WAC defensive team and the All-WAC newcomer team

Aimaq averages 14.5 points and a national-best 15.2 rebounds per game.

He is the first Division I player since 1980 to average at least 14 points and 15 rebounds per contest.

Aimaq leads the nation in total rebounds (317) and defensive rebounds per game (10.8).

The native of Richmond, British Columbia, Canada ranks second nationally in offensive rebounds per game (4.29) and fifth in double-doubles (14).

Aimaq achieved WAC player of the week honors three times.

He is only the fifth Wolverine in school history to achieve first-team All-WAC honors.

Other Wolverines honored Tuesday included senior forward Jamison Overton, who made the second team, and graduate student forward Evan Cole and junior shooting guard Trey Woodbury who achieved honorable mention recognition.

Overton averages 15.9 points and 4.2 rebounds per game this season for the Wolverines.

Woodbury averages 14.7 points and 4.1 rebounds per contest for the 11-10 (9-4 in WAC play) Wolverines.

UVU is the No. 2 seed in this week’s WAC Tournament at Las Vegas and will play the winner of No. 3 New Mexico State-No. 6 Texas-Rio Grande Valley Friday evening in the conference semifinals.
