SALT LAKE CITY-Saturday, Utah head football coach Morgan Scalley announced Derrick Odum as the Utes’ new safeties coach.
Odum is a Utah alum and has spent 28 years in coaching. He comes to the Utes’ program from San José State where he served as the Spartans’ defensive coordinator for the past 9 seasons.
Odum previously served as Utah’s safeties coach from 2005-2007. In his first stint with the Utes, Odum coached Eric Weddle to consensus All-American status in 2006 and the Utes led Division I in pass efficiency defense in 2007 while also finishing fifth nationally in scoring defense that season.
Odum also has coached the secondary at SMU (2008-2014), Houston (2003-04), Utah State (2000-02) and NCAA FCS Montana (1998-99). He served as a graduate assistant at Utah under then-Utes head coach Ron McBride from 1995-1997.
While playing for the Utes, Odum starred at both football and baseball (1989-1992, football; 1992-1993, baseball).
Odum is a 1993 graduate of the University of Utah.
Later Saturday, Scalley added Kevin McGiven as the program’s new offensive coordinator. McGiven adds 25 years of coaching experience including 17 at the NCAA Division I level.
McGiven comes to the Utes from Utah State where he served as the Aggies’ offensive coordinator in 2025.
A native of Orem and a Mountain View High School graduate (1995), McGiven also has coaching experience at San José State, Oregon State, Weber State, Southern Utah, Louisiana Tech and Montana State.
McGiven played collegiately at Eastern Arizona Junior College of Thatcher, Ariz. and Louisiana Tech before graduating from Utah Valley in 2001 and earning a Master’s at BYU in 2005.
