BYU Athletics Announces 2021 Athletics Hall of Fame Class

PROVO, Utah-BYU Athletics, per a Wednesday announcement, will induct four former All-Americans and a nationally-recognized athletic trainer into its athletics Hall of Fame Friday September 24.

Those to be enshrined are baseball standout Brian Banks, men’s basketball star Jimmer Fredette, athletic trainer Gaye Merrill, track and field standout Amy Menlove Otis and women’s golfer Carrie Summerhays Roberts.

Banks starred at BYU in 1990 and in the 1992 and 1993 seasons before being signed by the Milwaukee Brewers in the 1993 MLB Draft and signed a professional contract.

He starred with the Brewers (1996-1999) and Florida Marlins (2002-2003) posting 13 home runs and 64 RBI.

Fredette excelled for the Cougars on the hardwood from 2007-2011. He received All-American honors in 2010 and USWBA All-District VIII first-team selection honors on three occasions. He also received All-American distinction from The Associated Press, NABC Coaches, the Sporting News and The Basketball Times.

Fredette posted 2,599 career points for the Cougars, becoming BYU basketball’s all-time leading scorer.

Merrill worked as an athletic trainer for the Cougars’ athletics department from 1981 until her passing from cancer in May 2010.

Otis excelled for the Cougars from 2004-2010, becoming a seven-time All-American. She excelled in the pentathlon during her collegiate career.

She served a Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints mission in the Ohio Cleveland Mission during her collegiate eligibility.

She concluded her collegiate career in 2010 by earning All-American honors in the pentathlon.

Roberts, a former Wasatch High School star, became a four-time all-conference award winner and was named as the back-to-back Mountain West Conference golfer of the year in 2000 and 2001.
