On Tuesday Feb 2nd the Sanpete County Republican Party elected Jared Buchanan to replace Interim Sheriff Gary Larson. Larson was appointed as Interim Sheriff on January 4th, 2021 when Brian Nielsen left Sanpete County after 10 years. Nielsen was appointed by, then Governor Elect, Spencer Cox to serve as Director of Corrections for the State of Utah.
The Sanpete County Republican Party began accepting letters of intent shortly after Sheriff Nielsen’s appointment was announced. The applicants were Jared Buchanan, Keith Jensen, and Rick Rasmussen. There were 229 delegates that participated in the vote. The vote breakdown was Jared Buchanan 55.1%, Keith Jensen 24.8%, and Rick Rasmussen 20.1%.
