UT Doctor Shortage Worsening

(Salt Lake City, UT) — Utah’s doctor shortage is getting worse with a wave of physicians expected to retire soon. “The Salt Lake Tribune” says 18 percent of Utah doctors reported plans on retiring in the next five years in a report issued in 2015. Data collected in that year by the American Association of Medical Colleges ranked the state 43rd for the availability of doctors. An executive from the Utah Medical Association blames the problem on lack of residency slots for graduating med students in Utah, lower pay compared to other states, and the cost of higher education.
