Polygamous leader cites brain damage in trial delay request

SALT LAKE CITY (AP) — A polygamous sect leader who was recently caught after being on the run for a year is asking for more time to prepare for trial so his attorneys can determine if he suffered brain injuries in two past accidents.

Lyle Jeffs’ attorney cited a three-story fall during construction work and a car accident in new request filed Monday asking judge to delay the food stamp fraud trial by four months into 2018.

Lawyer Kathryn Nester says she recently learned of the incidents and needs time to determine if Jeffs has mental or physical defects as a result of the injuries.

Jeffs was recaptured in South Dakota this summer while apparently living out of his pickup truck. He had been a fugitive since escaping home confinement in Salt Lake City in June 2016.
