SALT LAKE CITY (AP) — Parents of transgender and intersex children in Utah are asking state lawmakers not to bar their kids from officially changing their gender on birth certificates.
Amie Schofield said Wednesday she fears her 4-year-old daughter could be bullied or ostracized if school records reveal her birth certificate says she was born a boy.
After she spoke, panel of lawmakers voted to keep studying a proposal that includes a requirement for people to be 18 before they change their gender on state documents.
The plan to standardize the gender-change rules surfaced last year after it emerged that some Utah judges weren’t allowing transgender people to change their driver’s licenses.
The proposal failed under criticism from both conservatives and LGBT groups, but its sponsor, Republican Sen. Todd Weiler, says the issue can’t be ignored.
