Paraglider Dies in Monroe

A paraglider has passed away after a crash in Monroe. On Oct. 4 an ambulance was dispatched to a paraglider who had gone down hard in a yard near 200 East 500 South.

When deputies arrived, EMS was on scene and performing CPR, but were unsuccessful at resuscitating the individual who was identified as Leif Eric Swanson from Washington state. Witnesses reported seeing Swanson start to spiral down at a high rate of speed, hitting the roof of a house and then being tangled up in a tree.

Using a tracking device that Swanson had carried with him during the flight, authorities checked his flight path and it does not appear that anything in the path contributed to the accident. According to Sevier County Sheriff Nathan Curtis it appears Swanson may have suffered a medical episode while he was still in the air.
