MONA, Utah-Sunday, a couple was arrested after police found numerous assault rifles, bomb-making materials, knives and drugs at their Mona home.
34-year-old Douglas Edward Garlick and 33-year-old Tausha Marie Garlick were booked into the Juab County Jail in Nephi for investigation of 16 counts of possession of a weapon by a restricted person, five counts of possession of an explosive device, drug distribution and marijuana possession.
Douglas Garlick was also arrested for investigation of an additional count of possession of an explosive device, drug possession and possession of drug paraphernalia.
Friday, the investigation began when Juab County Sheriff’s Office deputies were asked to conduct a welfare check on Douglas Garlick, who has a history of mental health issues.
Garlick’s mother told deputies her son “was paranoid and unstable.” He sent her a text stating he and Tausha Garlick would always love her no matter what happened, per a police booking affidavit.
When deputies went to the Garlick residence, Doug Garlick did not answer the door right away and then only talked to police behind the door, asking why police were there, per the affidavit.
Authorities noticed Garlick “was wearing gloves and seemed paranoid” as they peered through the window.
After getting Garlick to open the door, a sheriff’s office lieutenant noticed Douglas Garlick was wearing a holster with a pistol in it.
The affidavit confirmed there were several rifle magazines on his belt and Douglas Garlick kept talking about people watching him.
After speaking with Douglas Garlick, deputies left the home and developed a plan to safely take the couple into custody.
Deputies had surveillance on the Garlick residence Saturday. Sunday, Douglas Garlick was allegedly involved in a domestic violence incident and was safely taken into custody several miles away from his home per the affidavit.
In his car, deputies found an assault-style rifle, an assault shotgun with 16 rounds [one in the chamber], several lethal cutting instruments, rolls of money, thousands of dollars, silver, a bag of psychedelic mushrooms and a bag containing a white crystal substance per the affidavit.
After the Garlicks were taken into custody, a search warrant was served on their residence.
Three cricket bombs were also found as well as two handmade pipe bombs and thousands of rounds of ammunition and explosive-making material.
Deputies also believe the Garlicks were also cultivating and distributing psychedelic mushrooms.
Douglas Garlick was previously convicted of aggravated robbery in 2009, a first-degree felony, and sentenced to a term of 5 years to life in the Utah State Prison.
