Immigrant family hopes for change after 3 years in sanctuary

SALT LAKE CITY (AP) — Vicky Chavez and her daughters have taken sanctuary for three years in a church in Salt Lake City, worried that if they leave the building immigration authorities might apprehend them and send them back to Honduras. Chavez tells the Deseret News she’s hopeful that will change as President Joe Biden’s administration begins reshaping immigration enforcement policies. The First Unitarian Church has taken another step to support her by joining a lawsuit from her and three other undocumented women in similar situations in Ohio, Texas and Virginia. They allege U.S. immigration officials under then-President Trump stuck them each with roughly $60,000 in fines because they spoke out.
