(Salt Lake City, UT) — Scientists are worried that declining water levels at the Great Salt Lake are increasing the salt content of the water that remains. Researchers at Weber State University say the salinity in the northern portion of the lake is increasing because of reduced water flow. They say the salt content could hurt the brine shrimp population, which in turn could damage the habitat of migratory birds at the lake. The higher salt level could also hurt industries that rely on the lake such as shrimping, salt production and tourism.
