(Salt Lake City, UT) — Governor Spencer Cox has instituted a ban on all applications of the social media platform called Tik Tok from being installed on all state-owned devices. The executive order the governor signed yesterday bans state agencies or agency employees from downloading the TikTok app or visiting the TikTok website on state-owned devices, such as phones and laptops. It only applies to executive branch offices and does not affect institutions of higher education, the attorney general’s office, the state auditor’s office or the state treasurer’s office. TikTok is owned by a Chinese firm and under Chinese national security law, the government can force companies to turn over data.
