University of Utah Athletics Hall of Fame Announced For 2022

SALT LAKE CITY-Per Wednesday news, eight former University of Utah athletics standouts will be enshrined in the Utes’ athletics Hall of Fame for 2002.

The following former UofU standouts will be honored September 9 at Rice-Eccles Stadium ahead of the following evening’s home game against Southern Utah:

Football

Defensive back Eric Weddle. Weddle starred for the Utes as a consensus All-American in 2006 and a two-time Mountain West Conference defensive player of the year (2005 and 2006). Weddle later starred with the San Diego Chargers and Los Angeles Rams in the NFL, helping the Rams win Super Bowl LVI.

Guard Chris Kemoeatu. Kemoeatu became a first-team All-American in 2004 and helped that Utes squad set single-season school records for total offense and scoring offense.

Men’s Basketball

Forward Mitch Smith. Smith starred for the Runnin’ Utes from 1985-1989. He posted 13.2 points and 8.4 rebounds and recorded more than 1,000 points and 1,000 rebounds during his career.

He was a three-time All-WAC performer for the Runnin’ Utes during his collegiate career.

Women’s Basketball

Point guard Shona Thorburn. From 2002-2006, the native of Hamilton, Ontario, Canada averaged 13.3 points and 6 rebounds per game for the Utes. In 2005, she became a third-team All-American. She posted 1,735 career points for Utes, ranking her sixth all-time in school annals. In 2006, she was drafted No. 7 overall in the WNBA Draft by the Minnesota Lynx.

Skiing

Women’s standout Christl Hager. She was the only three-time national champion in program history, winning NCAA giant slalom national crowns in 1994, 1995 and 1997.

Cross Country-Track

Carla Pittelkow. She was a three-time All-American for the Utes. She was a cross country All-American in 1981 and a 1982 All-American in the 1500 and 5000 meter races during the track season.

Women’s Swimming

Heidi Hausknecht. The former Cottonwood High School star won the 2000 Mountain West Conference championship in the 50 free and 100 butterfly. She competed in the 100 butterfly at the 2000 US Olympic Trails ahead of the 2000 Olympics at Sydney.

Gymnastics

Melissa Vituj. Vituj was an 11-time All-American while competing for the Red Rocks from 2001-2004.
