Boys Basketball

3-A State Championship Game @ SVC

RICHFIELD, Utah-Trey Miles amassed 24 points on 7-9 from the field and the Morgan Trojans overpowered Richfield 63-54 to win the 3-A state championship at the Sevier Valley Center Saturday evening. The Trojans shot a torrid 58.8 percent for the game in earning their 20th win of the season and their fourth state title in school history. Morgan previously won titles in 1974, 2013 and 2014. The Wildcats were led in defeat by Payton Thompson’s 17 points on 6-9 from the field.

3-A 3rd-4th Place Game @ SVC

RICHFIELD, Utah-Kyson Stilson posted 28 points and 11 rebounds and Cade Brazier added 23 points on 9-13 from the field as the Emery Spartans overpowered Manti 78-73 Saturday to claim third place at the 3-A boys basketball tournament at the Sevier Valley Center. Adam Huff and Mason Thompson had 18 points apiece in the loss for the Templars.

3-A 5th-6th Place Game @ SVC

RICHFIELD, Utah-Kaetz King netted 19 points and Tyson Chisholm added 16 points on 5-7 shooting as the South Sevier Rams clinched fifth place at the 3-A boys state tournament with a 61-52 win over Judge Saturday at the Sevier Valley Center. Makhiah Tarver had 14 points on 7-9 shooting in the loss for the Bulldogs.

2-A 3rd-4th Place Game @ Weber State

OGDEN, Utah-Zander Smith’s 23 points led the way as the Rowland Hall-St. Mark’s Winged Lions soared past Kanab 66-58 at the 2-A boys state tournament at the Dee Events Center to claim third place. Sam Orton’s 14 points and 9 rebounds led the Cowboys in defeat.

1-A Play-In Game @ Heber City

HEBER CITY, Utah-Kelby Jessen posted 22 points, leading the Piute Thunderbirds to an 88-23 decimation of Monument Valley Saturday in the 1-A play-in game at Rocky Mountain Middle School in Heber City. Lakota Benally’s 7 points led the Cougars in the loss. The Thunderbirds are next in action Wednesday morning at 10:00 am at the Sevier Valley Center in the 1-A state tournament’s first round against the Wendover Wildcats.

Girls Basketball

2-A State Championship Game @ Weber State

OGDEN, Utah-Brittlyn Carter made a key steal in the closing seconds and wisely clanked a free throw to make time expire as the Beaver Beavers outlasted Kanab 54-52 Saturday at the Dee Events Center to clinch the 2-A state girls championship. Carter had 17 points on the evening with Sydnee Gillins’ 24 points leading the way for the Beavers. Sidney McDonald had 17 points in defeat for Kanab. The dynastic Beavers have now won 12 state championships, tied for Panguitch for the second-most in Utah high school history. Incidentally, the Bobcats have a chance to surpass the Beavers once again next week during the 1-A state tournament.

3-A 3rd-4th Place Game @ SVC

RICHFIELD, Utah-Jarica Steck’s 16 points on 6-11 shooting led the Richfield Wildcats to third place at the 3-A girls state tournament by routing Juab 54-32 Saturday at the Sevier Valley Center. Alexa Lord added 13 points and 8 rebounds in the win for Richfield as they end their season at 16-9 while Juab concludes this season at 17-8. Bayli Heap had 8 points and 5 rebounds in defeat for the Wasps.

3-A 5th-6th Place Game @ SVC

RICHFIELD, Utah-Mackenzie Jones posted 21 points and 9 rebounds on 6-10 shooting as the South Sevier Rams downed Judge 57-43 to claim 5th place at the Sevier Valley Center to conclude their run at the 3-A state tournament Saturday. Kylie Jenson added 15 points and 11 rebounds and Brookell Brindley posted 14 points on 4-8 from the field for the Rams. South Sevier concludes the season at 20-6. Teya Sidberry’s 20 points and 7 rebounds led the Bulldogs in the loss.

2-A 5th-6th Place Game @ Weber State

OGDEN, Utah-Kobree Penney netted 14 points, 7 rebounds and 5 steals as the Millard Eagles clinched fifth place with a 41-34 win over Duchesne Saturday at the 2-A girls state tournament at the Dee Events Center on the campus of Weber State University. Ashlyn Gatherum’s 13 points led the Duchesne Eagles in defeat.
