IRVING, Texas-Monday, BYU junior tailback LJ Martin was named the Big 12 Offensive Player of the Week following the Cougars’ 26-14 win over Cincinnati last Saturday.
The native of El Paso, Texas ran for a career-high 222 yards on 32 carries (6.9 yards per attempt), netting the eighth-highest single-game total in program history.
Martin’s 1,134 rushing yards lead the Big 12 and rank 7th nationally.
Martin and his BYU teammates return to action Saturday by hosting Central Florida to conclude the regular season. With a win, the Cougars secure a berth in the Big 12 championship game Saturday December 6 at AT&T Stadium of Arlington, Texas.
Additionally, the Cougars’ defensive line received Big 12 weekly honors. The Bearcats ran for only 87 yards on 3.8 yards per attempt on the evening. While Cincinnati came into Saturday’s game ranked seventh nationally in red zone percentage (94.8 percent), the Cougars held the Bearcats to a 33 percent success ratio (1/3) inside their 20-yard line Saturday.
