Utah Republicans Back Bill That Could Keep Candidates Off Primary Ballot

(Salt Lake City, UT) — Some Utah Republicans are pushing a bill that could keep candidates who avoid party conventions from reaching the ballot. House Bill 393 would allow candidates who win at least 70-percent of the vote at a party convention to become the party’s sole candidate in a general election. Those candidates would not face a competitive primary election, even if other candidates gather enough signatures to be placed on the ballot. Democrats and some Republican leaders in the legislature say they won’t support the bill, which has yet to be scheduled for a committee hearing.
