Utah flag could get redesign under legislative proposal

SALT LAKE CITY (AP) — A bill that would create a commission to review and recommend designs for a new state flag passed the Utah House.

The Salt Lake Tribune reports that the House voted 46-26 on Friday to approve the commission. The bill now goes to the Senate for consideration.

Republican Rep. Steve Handy introduced the bill after speaking to a constituent who thought it would be a good idea.

The state flag has been largely the same since first being used in 1896. It includes a variation of state and national symbols like a bald eagle and a beehive on a blue backdrop.

If the measure passes, a panel would be assembled to review submissions and report to lawmakers by November. Legislators would make a final decision on the design.
