SALT LAKE CITY (AP) — The U.S. government is more than tripling the number of daily visitors allowed to hike the colorful, contoured landscape of a hike called The Wave in the U.S. Southwest. The plan announced Monday will allow as many as 64 people per day, up from the previous limit of 20. It takes effect Feb. 1. Fewer than 4% of the 215,500 people who requested permits through November 2020 were granted them. Conservationists say the change will damage the fragile desert landscape and cut into the solitude of the hiking experience. Government officials says it will strike a balance between providing more access to the iconic trail while preserving the landscape.
