(Salt Lake City, UT) — The University of Utah is agreeing to pay five-million dollars to the parents of an international student who allegedly was murdered by her ex-boyfriend. The settlement that became public yesterday acknowledges that the university failed to recognize Zhifan Dong was in danger in the weeks before she was killed in February of last year. The 19-year-old woman and her roommate spoke to U. housing staff several times, reporting that her boyfriend hit her when she broke up with him and that she was afraid of what he might do next. Campus police weren’t called until almost a month after Dong’s first report. She was killed three days later.
