(Salt Lake City, UT) — A bill that would have allowed the state to help parents send their children to private schools will not be advancing in the Utah Legislature. House Bill 331 was defeated in a 53-22 vote in the House yesterday. The bill had been modified to set an income limit for eligibility and to guarantee that public education funding would not be affected if it passed. But opponents said the amendments were not enough to offset their fears that the bill did not help enough families and could reduce per-pupil spending.
