Richfield Receives New H.A.W.K. Crosswalk

A new traffic signal has been installed on Main Street in Richfield. The high-intensity activated crosswalk, or H.A.W.K., signal system is now operational at 500 North Main street. According to a press release from the Richfield City Police Department, the system “is designed to safely stop vehicle traffic when pedestrians activate the crosswalk. Unlike a traditional traffic signal, the H.A.W.K. signal only operates when someone is crossing, helping maintain traffic flow while prioritizing pedestrian safety.” The signal indications are as follows:

Flashing Yellow: Slow down and be alert; the signal has been activated.
Solid Yellow: Prepare to stop.
Solid Red: Stop completely.
Flashing Red: Come to a full stop, then proceed only when the crosswalk and intersection are clear.

Richfield City Police Chief Trent Lloyd shared, “this new crosswalk is an important step in protecting pedestrians and students who cross North Main Street every day. Following the signal instructions will help prevent accidents and keep our community safe.”
