SALT LAKE CITY (AP) — A new deal between concerned locals and state trust land officials has scuttled a proposed gravel pit near Capitol Reef National Park.
The Salt Lake Tribune reports that the School and Institutional Trust Lands Administration on Thursday approved a $525,000 bid from Teasdale residents for a land parcel.
The residents had created a limited liability company in hopes of warding off industrial development.
Group leader Dave Van Dyke says the 125-acre (60-hectare) parcel, which overlooks Fremont River, should remain zoned for agricultural and residential uses.
The agreement effectively closes the door on a mineral lease proposed by a Loa construction firm that wanted to mine the area for gravel.
The administration had previously affirmed the lease but residents in Torrey filed a lawsuit in response.
