(Salt Lake City, UT) — Lawmakers are seeking to streamline the removal of certain kinds of books from the state’s public school library shelves. The House Education Committee on Tuesday voted ten to two recommending approval of HB29. This bill clarifies and updates how officials are to determine what books meet the state standard for indecent or pornographic content. In 2022, Utah lawmakers passed HB374, a bill governing sensitive materials affecting school libraries. Sponsors say the key change in this new legislation would require the removal of material when officials in three school districts say it violates the state code for sensitive materials.
