Two people are in custody after a high speed chase in Kane County. On Jan. 19, a trooper with the Utah Highway Patrol spotted a Volkswagen Jetta traveling over 90 mph westbound on Highway 89 towards Kanab. When the trooper pulled out behind them, they sped up to well over 100 mph. The trooper radioed ahead and Kane County Deputies, Kanab City Police and a few more UHP officers were able to prepare spike strips a few miles down the road. The driver hit the first set of spikes exceeding 130 mph, deflating one tire, then flattened the rest on a second set. This caused the vehicle to fail close to Kanab. Both the drive and the passenger of the vehicle were taken into custody by the UHP.
