(Salt Lake City, UT) — Governor Gary Herbert says he won’t stand in the way of a plan by lawmakers to raise the sales tax on food, just as long as steps are created to help the poor. Republican lawmakers are now working to finalize a possible tax reform package, which would restore the sales tax on food to four-point-seven-five-percent. Former Governor Jon Huntsman cut that tax in 2006 and 2007, bringing it to one-point-seven-five-percent today. Herbert says raising the tax on food makes sense because the range of items subject to taxes in Utah has been shrinking.
