Just after 10:30 p.m. on Aug. 21, authorities responded to a fire at K & D Forest Products in Panguitch, one of the larger lumber mills in the state. Fire departments from Panguitch Lake, Bryce Canyon City, Tropic and Henrieville responded, and efforts to put out the blaze lasted until 4:30 a.m. According to owner Kevin Frandsen, “while the fire didn’t spread to the nearby lumber, the intense heat of the flames damaged the machinery.” The sawmill is the second biggest industry in Panguitch with between 20 and 25 employees. The cause of the fire is under investigation.
