PROVO, Utah (AP) — A Brigham Young University dean is issuing a clear condemnation of victim-blaming and underscoring the importance of consent at the institution that’s come under fire for its handling of sexual-assault cases.
The Daily Herald in Provo reports Benjamin Ogles said at a speech Tuesday that victims must never be held accountable, no matter what they were wearing or what happened before the assault.
Ogles says clear consent is essential, and people who freeze up or stop resisting sexual contact have not given consent.
The speech that also referenced the Me Too movement comes nearly two years after female students said they reported being sexually assaulted but were instead investigated for possible violations of the Mormon-owned school’s honor code, which forbids premarital sex and alcohol, among other things.
