(Salt Lake City, UT) — A bill that would shield some companies who hire convicted felons from lawsuits is being considered by the Utah Legislature. A committee voted 3-1 to advance Senate Bill 95 on Friday. The bill would protect industries from lawsuits that are based solely on the fact that they hired someone with a criminal record. Industries covered include construction, culinary arts, manufacturing, mining, automotive and transportation. Supporters say it would help felons stay out of the criminal justice system by giving them a second chance at productive careers.
