SALT LAKE CITY (AP) — A proposal that would have precluded parents from defending themselves against child endangerment charges if they kick a kid out for being LGBTQ has stalled in a committee hearing.

Republican lawmakers on Monday in a House committee meeting opted not to vote on the bill following concerns that it would push government regulation on families.

Bill sponsor Democratic Rep. Elizabeth Weight says she introduced the plan after learning about the problem of LGBTQ youth getting kicked out of their homes.

Kristen Mitchell, who runs one of the only youth homeless shelters in Utah, says about 35 percent of their residents are LGBTQ. But she says the reasons for being homeless aren’t always related to sexual orientation.

The majority of Utah residents are Mormon, a conservative faith that is upholding theological opposition to same-sex relationships.
