Authorities: I-15 crash happened after driver fell asleep

PLEASANT GROVE, Utah (AP) — Authorities in Utah say the crash on Interstate 15 that left a Highway Patrol trooper critically injured occurred after the driver of a sport utility vehicle fell asleep.

Utah County sheriff’s office Sgt. Spencer Cannon tells KSL-TV (http://bit.ly/2mSB3um ) the 48-year-old Orem resident veered across multiple lanes and slammed into the rear of the cruiser, which in turn hit a vehicle that the trooper had pulled over.

Highway Patrol Sgt. Todd Royce says 27-year-old trooper Devin Gurney is expected to recover from his injuries.

The incident happened around 10:50 a.m. Monday, when Gurney and the car he had pulled over where inside the emergency lane of southbound I-15.

The 28-year-old woman who had been pulled over was taken to a Provo hospital. A 15-month-old boy in that car was not injured.

Three children who were in the SUV suffered minor injuries.
