SALT LAKE CITY (AP) — The release of a potentially hazardous material forced the evacuation of two dozen homes in American Fork overnight.
Fire Captain Benjamin Anderson told KSL-TV a mandatory evacuation was ordered at about 10 p.m. Monday after someone opened a gas cylinder with a potentially harmful odor.
A hazmat team was called and several people were treated on scene for symptoms of respiratory problems, but no serious injuries were reported.
Anderson says approximately 25 homes were evacuated in a 1,000-foot circle around the material. Fifty people went to a nearby LDS church building before the evacuation was lifted several hours later.
Anderson says the material was deemed potentially dangerous, but there was no threat of an explosion. He says crews sealed the cylinder and removed it.
