Seventeen people are safe in Garfield County after the Sheriff’s Office says they needed to be rescued from a slot canyon. The young men’s group from the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints were in Sandthrax Canyon June 9 for a hike and got lost. Rescue teams were dispatched to the canyon that evening to drop food and water from a helicopter to the 15 youth and two adults. The next morning on June 10, helicopter crews hoisted the group out in about three hours. Other than a suspected sprained ankle for one of the leaders, no other injuries were reported.
