Samuel Shaffer, the professed prophet of the Knights of the Crystal Blade doomsday cult, made an appearance in Sixth District Court in Manti on Wednesday. Shaffer was there for a waiver hearing on first and second degree felony sodomy on a child, child bigamy and obstruction of justice charges stemming from his participation in the disappearance of fellow cult member John Coltharp’s children and his marriage to Coltharp’s 8-year old daughter. Shaffer’s attorney, David Angerhofer, asked for a continuance of the hearing as he and Shaffer haven’t had time to review the evidence, including the victims’ interviews with police at the Children’s Justice Center. Angerhofer asked for the hearing to be continued until after Shaffer is sentenced in Cedar City on May 8 on similar charges. Judge Marvin Bagley continued Shaffer’s hearing in Sanpete County until May 14.
