The road though Marysvale Canyon was closed for hours after a semi truck crashed April 27, blocking off traffic.
Utah Highway Patrol trooper Jared Jensen says that the semi truck crashed at 12:49 p.m., North of Big Rock Candy Mountain near Mile Post 186. Jensen says the semi drifted from the road and onto the guardrail. The truck overturned, partial ejecting Daniel Spell, 57, of Caldwell, Idaho. Spell was pinned between the now upside-down semi and the guardrail. The crash completely closed US 89 in both directions.
UHP responded to the scene along with the Paiute County Sheriff’s Office, the Sevier County Sheriff’s Office, and Monroe’s Fire and Ambulance crews.
Spell was flown by helicopter to the Utah Valley Regional Hospital with what Jensen described as “Serious injuries to his chest and upper extremities.â€
The road was closed until 4:56 p.m. and crews stayed for several more hours clearing up the wreck and offloading the watermelons that Spell was hauling.
The Marysvale Canyon is known for its numerous, sharp, curves.
