Sam Merrill; T.J. Haws, Honored For Academic Excellence Monday

AUSTIN, Texas-While Utah State senior guard and BYU senior guard T.J. Haws are both well-renowned for their magnificence on the hardwood, these student-athletes were honored for their academic excellence Monday.

Per a release from the College Sports Information Directors of America, both decorated standouts were honored by making the CoSIDA all-Academic squads.

Merrill, who posted 27 points and 6 rebounds, including a game-winning 3-pointer in a 59-56 win against San Diego State to clinch the Mountain West Tournament title at Las Vegas Saturday, made the second team. The former Bountiful High School star currently has a 3.39 GPA in business administration.

Merrill is averaging 19.7 points, 4.1 rebounds and 3.9 assists for the Aggies this season. Having earned the Mountain West’s automatic NCAA Tournament bid, they will learn where they are playing in the NCAA Tournament Sunday at 4:00 pm MDT during a national broadcast on CBS.

Haws, who has a 3.46 GPA in finance, made the third team. The former Lone Peak star is currently averaging 14.3 points and 5.8 assists per game for the Cougars, who face Saint Mary’s this evening in the West Coast Conference semifinals at the Orleans Arena of Las Vegas.
