Anthony Christensen pleads guilty to murder

Almost three years after her death, Kammy Mae Edmunds killer has pleaded guilty.  Anthony Jeffery Christensen was set to go to trial on February 4, but instead has pleaded guilty to first-degree murder.  He admitted that on March 31, 2017, he and Kammy had been drinking, got into an argument, and he caused her death by beating her.   He also pleaded guilty to second-degree obstruction of justice for staging an automobile accident he said had been the cause of Kammy’s death.  As a result of his plea, a count of desecration of a body was dropped.  Sanpete County Attorney Kevin Daniels said he had spoken to Tammy Coates, Kammy’s mother, and other family members, and they were on board with the agreement.

In a separate trial last week, Christensen was found guilty of assault by a prisoner, which was enhanced to a first-degree felony because he is considered a habitual offender.  A second assault charge has been dropped as part of his plea in the murder case.

First-degree felonies carry a sentence of five years to life in prison, and a second-degree felony sentence is 1 to 15 years in prison.  According to the plea agreement, Christensen’s sentences will run concurrent with each other.  He will be sentenced on March 4 in front of Judge Marvin Bagley.

Daniels emphasized that justice for Kammy has been his goal all along, and all parties agreed that with Christensen’s guilty plea, that has finally been accomplished.  After her death, the Kammy Mae Foundation was organized by Kammy’s mother to help raise awareness of domestic violence and join the fight to bring it to an end.
