Potential Medicaid Changes Debated In Utah

By Jaden Kitchen

The Trump administration is considering changes to the medicaid program.

The new plan includes adding work requirements for people with Medicaid.

Stacy Stanford with the Utah Health Policy Project disagrees with the plan. She says that the common refrain that poor people just don’t want to work is untrue.

“A majority of people on Medicaid across the country are working,” Stanford said. “And that’s true in Utah as well.”

Those in favor of the move argue that people are healthier if they’re employed or contributing to their communities as volunteers. They claim that reliance on government programs such as Medicaid can lead to dependency.

Utah is one of ten states that has filed for a waiver to implement Trump’s plan.
