BYU-Utah State Meet Saturday At Logan In Non-Conference Tilt

LOGAN, Utah-Saturday, BYU (3-4) and Utah State (4-3, 3-1 in Mountain West Conference play) meet on the gridiron at Maverik Stadium in Logan for an 8:05 pm kickoff. This game can also be heard on KSVC-AM 980 and FM-100.5 as well as online at midutahradio.com.

The Cougars come into this road game against the Aggies following a bye week and a 28-25 upset win over then- No. 14 Boise State October 19 at LaVell Edwards Stadium.

BYU comes into Saturday’s game ranked 103rd nationally in scoring offense (23.1 points per game).

However, freshman signal-caller Baylor Romney (15-26, 221 yards. 2 TD’s against Boise State) gave the moribund Cougars’ offense some hope.

In addressing the media Monday, BYU head coach Kalani Sitake said that freshman quarterback Jaren Hall “should be able to play” against the Aggies.

However, in showing his gamesmanship, Sitake declined to say who would start for the Cougars Saturday.

The Cougars’ running game is paced by senior tailback Emmanuel Esukpa (43 car, 184 yards, 2 TD’s) and sophomore running mate Lopini Katoa (38 car, 160 yards, TD).

In the receiving department, BYU is bolstered by junior tight end Matt Bushman (28 rec, 398 yards, 3 TD’s) and senior receiver Aleva Hifo (25 rec, 314 yards, 2 TD’s).

Sophomore kicker/punter Jake Oldroyd has made 13 of 18 field goals on the season for the Cougars and 13 of his 14 PAT’s.

The Cougars rank 88th in scoring defense nationally (29.7 points per game).

Sophomore defensive lineman Lorenzo Fauatea (2 sacks) and junior linebacker Isaiah Kaufusi (2 interceptions) are the Cougars’ defensive leaders.

Junior linebacker Kavika Fonua, freshman linebacker Tyler Allgeier, Fauatea and sophomore linebacker Chaz Ah You all have a forced fumble on the season for BYU.

The Aggies score 29 points per game, which ties them for 67th nationally with Illinois.

Junior signal-caller Jordan Love has fallen on hard times this season for Utah State. He completes 59.8 percent of his passes (147-246) on the season for 8 touchdowns and 9 interceptions.

Senior tailback Gerold Bright (89 car, 469 yards, 4 TD’s) and junior back Jaylen Warren (64 car, 412 yards, TD) have each been solid on the season for Utah State, averaging 5.3 and 6.4 yards per tote, respectively.

Graduate student receiver Siaosi Mariner (29 rec, 441 yards, 3 TD’s) and sophomore receiver Deven Thompkins (24 rec, 283 yards, 3 TD’s) have been the Aggies’ receiving leaders.

The Aggies rank second in the country in kickoff return average (32.3 yards per return) with junior receiver Savon Scarver having returned one kickoff for a score this season.

Senior kicker Dominik Eberle has made 11 of his 13 field goal attempts on the season and all 24 of his PAT attempts.

He is currently tied with tailback Robert Turbin (2007-2011) for 308 points for the most in school history.

Utah State is 47th nationally in scoring defense (24.1 points per game).

Junior linebacker David Woodward is third nationally in both tackles (93) and forced fumbles (4). Woodward also has two sacks.

Junior defensive end Nick Heninger has 3 sacks to pace Utah State. Junior safety Shaq Bond (2 interceptions) leads the Aggies in that category.

The Cougars lead the all-time series 48-37-3 in a series dating back to 1922. Utah State leads 19-17-2 all-time as the home team.
