The Kane County Sheriff’s Office is warning residents about another scam, this one involving Venmo, a digital wallet that lets you make payments to and from friends.
The Sheriff’s Office warned residents through a post on its Facebook page. According to the post the scam is done by sending a text to your phone number saying, “your account is about to be charged and if you want to cancel the withdrawal, you need to log in and decline it.”
The message provides a link for you to log in from there and it asks you to verify who you are by entering your bankcard number and other personal and financial information. When you log in through the link it allows you to use any username and password, even if it’s wrong.
The scam uses the same colors and fonts as the Venmo app.
The Sheriff’s Office is telling people not to use the link in the text, and if you have concerns to log in with the actual Venmo app or through their website. And if you did enter your information through the scam contact your bank or credit card lender.
