BYU men’s basketball star Yoeli Childs suspended for the first nine games of the season

PROVO, Utah-News broke Friday afternoon that BYU men’s basketball star forward Yoeli Childs will miss the first nine games of the season.

This is because of a violation of new NCAA agent/draft rules per a statement released by Brigham Young University.

The release states Childs declared for the 2019 NBA Draft and signed with an agent while the NCAA determined he was not compliant with the installation of these new rules.

The NCAA ruled Childs’ actions “impermissible” because he signed with his agent before filing paperwork with the NCAA, per the release.

The Provo-based university appealed the decision but the NCAA upheld its ruling.

BYU director of athletics Tom Holmoe expressed his disappointment with the NCAA’s decision but called Childs “honest and forthright throughout the reinstatement process.”

When speaking with the media, BYU head coach Mark Pope said much of this was done during a period when the Cougars had no head coach and that combined with these new NCAA rules, confusion was prevalent in the situation.

Pope also lauded Childs for admitting to his unintentional mistakes and for his best efforts to “do things exactly the right way.”
