“Exuberant” number of fraud cases in Richfield

Richfield City Police are investigating multiple cases of fraud in town that Police Chief Trent Lloyd says are extremely hard to catch.

According to Lloyd, several groups are working their way throughout the Western U.S. and Utah, leaving behind card skimmers. He believes they take the card information, than go somewhere else to withdraw money from an ATM.

The skimmers are being placed primarily inside stores on top of the card readers. They’re a thin overlay, that looks very similar to the original, with a few subtle differences.

“They’re making very good–I mean surprisingly good–skimmers,” Lloyd says.

Lloyd believes the same group who placed skimmers inside a Richfield Maverick in March could also be responsible for fraudulently drawing out hundreds of dollars from people’s accounts in town and Sevier County more recently.

Amounts withdrawn range from $100 to $2,000, with $500 being the most common.

“The best thing people can do is go over their accounts,” Lloyd says.

If you suspect you’re bank account, debit or credit card has been charged fraudulently, contact your financial institution immediately.
