Three teens killed in accident in Sanpete County Friday night

Three teens are now dead after a fatal crash in Sanpete County Friday night near Mt. Pleasant.

According to the Utah Highway Patrol, 18-year-old Ryan Lyman of Ephraim, 16-year-old Julie Oldroyd and 16-year-old Kody Wheeler both of Fountain Green, were killed after the car they were passengers in rear ended a flatbed truck on Power Plant Road around 9:30 p.m.

The driver of a Honda Elantra, a 16-year-old girl, was coming over a hill when she drove into the back of the truck, which was stopped in the road.

According to UHP Lt. Clay Morgan, the sedan didn’t have time to stop and burst into blames after it hit the truck. Fire officials were able to arrive quickly on scene and pull the driver from the vehicle.

Upon impact, two of the occupants were killed. They were not wearing seatbelts.

The other passenger, later died at the hospital. Officials also believe they were also not wearing a seatbelt.

The driver was taken to the hospital and is recovering with a head injury. She told officials she was wearing a seatbelt.

The 16-year-old driver of the truck and 14-year-old passenger are also recovering with minor injuries.

According to Morgan, the driver of the sedan could be facing charges as they investigate what lead up to the crash.

“This poor girl is going to have to live with this the rest of her life,” Morgan says. “Right now, everything’s on the table.”

Morgan also says because of the driver’s age, inexperience may have been a part of it.

“It’s horrible all the way around,” Morgan says. “We’ve just got to pay attention as we’re driving,”

Correction: An earlier version incorrectly stated Lyman died at the hospital. One of the girls was declared dead at the hospital.
