PORTLAND, Ore.-Thursday, BYU men’s basketball seeks to build upon a 67-49 win over Loyola Marymount as they visit the Portland Pilots at the Chiles Center as their West Coast Conference season ensues.
The Cougars come into this one at 14-10 (6-3 in WCC play) and face a Portland squad (7-17 and 0-9 in league play) seeking its first conference win of the season.
Freshman forward Gavin Baxter (25 points, 10 rebounds) made his first career start against the Lions and hit 10 of 14 shots from the field.
He is the fifth player in program history to post at least 20 points and 10 rebounds in his first start and only the second freshman, Shawn Bradley being the other.
The Cougars score 80.6 points per game while surrendering 77.2 points per contest.
Junior guard Yoeli Childs (21.2 points, 9.5 rebounds per game) and junior guard TJ Haws (17.2 points) continue to be the Cougars’ statistical leaders.
The Pilots come into this one scoring 67.6 points per game and surrendering 75.3 points per contest.
Sophomore guard Marcus Shaver Jr. scores 15.3 points per game to lead the Pilots. His fellow sophomore guard, JoJo Walker, is second on the squad with 12.2 points per contest.
The Cougars have dominated the Pilots, as they lead Portland 19-2 and have won their last two road games in the series.
