SALT LAKE CITY (AP) — Orrin Hatch is ending his tenure as the longest-serving Republican senator in history, capping a unique career that positioned him as one of the most prominent conservatives in the United States.
The departure Thursday of the vocal supporter of President Donald Trump ushers in another outsized Utah voice with a different take on the president: Mitt Romney, whose criticism of Trump is already making waves.
Romney has been sworn in to the seat from which Hatch is retiring after four decades.
A staunch conservative who wasn’t afraid to cross the aisle, Hatch has played major roles on everything from a health insurance program for low-income children to outlawing music downloads and shaping the makeup of the modern U.S. Supreme Court.
The 84-year-old recently has called for a return to an era of political civility.
