Two USU Athletic Teams Record All-Time High Academic Progress Rate Scores

LOGAN, Utah-Wednesday, the NCAA released its annual Division I academic progress rate and all 16 athletic programs Utah State University sponsors exceeded the 930 minimum four-year average benchmark set by the NCAA to qualify for postseason competition.

All Utah State teams achieved an average score of 945 during the most recent four-year period ending with the 2016-17 academic campaign.

Data compiled this year confirms two Utah State teams obtained their highest all-time four-year averages when compared to data on the NCAA’s database.

The APR began to be utilized as a measure of academic performance back in the 2003-04 academic year.

The Aggies’ squads to earn this honor are men’s cross country (1,000) and women’s soccer (995). Aggie women’s soccer, along with volleyball, recorded its highest APR score in program history for the third consecutive year, amassing respective scores of 995 and 984.

Furthermore, four Utah State athletic programs recorded improved APR scores from last year, as men’s track and field had a +15  increase, women’s basketball sported a +9 increase, men’s tennis improved by +6 and women’s cross country experienced a +4 increase.

The APR is valuable as it provides a “real-time” look at a team’s academic successes each semester/quarter by tracking each student-athlete’s academic progress. The APR entails eligibility, retention and graduation in the calculation while providing a distinct view of the academic culture that exists in each respective sport.
